Cement Collection

Cement is a binder formed from a mixture of calcined and ground limestone and clay, which hardens after contact with water. Since ancient times, pastes and mortars made from clay or clay lime, gypsum and lime have been used to join masonry in buildings.

Cement was first used in Ancient Greece using volcanic tuff extracted from the island of Santorini, the first natural cements.
In the 1st century BC, a natural cement that has resisted immersion in seawater for millennia was used in Ancient Rome, whereas Portland cements do not last more than 60 years in such conditions; volcanic ashes obtained from Pozzuoli, near Vesuvius, were part of its composition. The vault of the Pantheon is an example of this.
